Photovoltaic (PV) power generation is the most popular and widely applied clean energy technology, serving as a core force for advancing carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and replacing traditional fossil energy. Solar panels on rooftops, large-scale power stations in Gobi deserts, and PV street lamps in daily life all belong to PV power generation applications. Most people only have a superficial understanding that PV generates power from sunlight. In fact, the PV industry covers a complete knowledge system including working principles, core equipment, technical routes, application scenarios and development trends. This article elaborates on core PV knowledge in plain language to clarify basic industry facts and mainstream development status.

I. Core Principle of Photovoltaics: How Sunlight Converts into Electricity

The core principle of PV power generation is the photovoltaic effect, a unique physical property of semiconductor materials. Simply put, it converts solar energy directly into electrical energy through semiconductor devices, with no fuel consumption, exhaust emission or mechanical wear during operation.

The core material of conventional PV modules (solar panels) is silicon semiconductor. The internal cells are processed through doping technology to form P-type and N-type semiconductor structures, namely PN junctions. When sunlight irradiates the cell surface, photons strike electrons inside the semiconductor, separating electrons from their original orbits to form free electrons and holes. Driven by the electric field of the PN junction, free electrons move directionally to generate electric current. The collected electric energy is then transmitted through wires and converged by collection devices, and finally converted into alternating current via inverters for household, industrial and grid power consumption.

Different from traditional thermal and hydropower generation, PV power generation adopts direct photoelectric conversion without secondary energy conversion. The equipment operates with zero noise and zero pollution. As solar energy is a renewable and inexhaustible resource, it has become the mainstream of clean energy.

II. Core PV Equipment: Components of a Complete PV System

Many people mistakenly believe that a PV system only consists of solar panels. In fact, a fully functional PV power generation system is composed of four core components and auxiliary equipment, all of which are indispensable:

1. PV Modules (Solar Panels): The core power generation unit of the system, responsible for absorbing solar energy and completing photoelectric conversion, serving as the "power generation core" of the entire system. Currently, mainstream modules on the market are crystalline silicon modules with excellent durability, a standard service life of 25 to 30 years, and extremely low long-term attenuation rate.

2. Inverter: PV modules generate direct current (DC), while household appliances and public grids use alternating current (AC). The core function of an inverter is to realize DC-AC conversion. It also undertakes functions such as voltage stabilization, anti-islanding protection and fault protection, ensuring the safe and stable operation of the system.

3. Energy Storage Equipment (Batteries): An optional yet increasingly essential component. Standalone PV systems can only generate power during daytime with sunlight and cannot operate at night or on rainy days. Equipped with energy storage batteries, the system can store excess power generated during the day to realize all-day power supply, solving the intermittency and volatility of PV power generation. At present, most PV projects are matched with energy storage systems.

4. Brackets and Auxiliary Materials: Including PV brackets for fixing modules, cables, distribution boxes, lightning protection devices and other accessories. The brackets can adjust the installation angle according to application scenarios to maximize sunlight absorption and power generation efficiency. Auxiliary materials guarantee the long-term safety and stability of outdoor PV systems.

III. Classification of PV Power Generation: Two Mainstream Application Scenarios

Based on installed capacity and application scenarios, PV power generation is mainly divided into centralized PV and distributed PV, covering almost all application scenarios:

1. Centralized PV Power Stations: Mostly built on idle lands such as deserts, Gobi areas and tidal flats, these large-scale public energy projects feature high installed capacity and large power output. The generated power is directly integrated into the national grid and transmitted over long distances to urban and industrial power terminals. Such power stations are usually combined with wind power and energy storage systems to build integrated wind-solar-storage bases, forming a key support for national new energy power supply.

2. Distributed PV Power Stations: The most familiar PV form for the public, which realizes on-site power generation and consumption close to power users. It is mainly installed on rooftops of residential buildings, industrial and commercial factories, and office buildings with flexible installed capacity. The generated power is prioritized for self-use, and the surplus is fed into the grid. It effectively reduces users’ electricity costs and revitalizes idle roof space, boasting high cost performance and rapid popularization.

In addition, innovative PV modes including agro-PV complementary system, fishery-PV complementary system, PV desert control and Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) have been widely applied. These modes deliver integrated economic, industrial and ecological benefits and diversify PV application scenarios.

PV cells are the core of modules, and technical iteration of cells directly determines power generation efficiency and service life. Current mainstream PV technologies are categorized into P-type and N-type with a clear iteration trajectory:

1. Traditional P-type Cells (PERC): A mature early-stage technology and the market mainstream in the past decade, featuring low technical barriers and sufficient production capacity. However, it has obvious shortcomings, including low ceiling of power generation efficiency, high long-term operation attenuation and poor low-light power generation performance. It is currently being gradually phased out and only applied in a small number of low-end projects.

2. Advanced N-type Cells (Current Market Mainstream): The absolute mainstream technology in the current market, achieving all-round upgrades compared with P-type cells. Its core advantages include higher power generation efficiency, ultra-low attenuation, excellent low-light response and longer service life. Mainstream subdivided routes include TOPCon, HJT and BC cells, which are applicable to residential, industrial, commercial and large-scale power station scenarios. By 2026, N-type technologies have occupied over 70% of the market, completely replacing traditional P-type technologies.

Meanwhile, the cutting-edge perovskite PV technology is developing rapidly, breaking the efficiency ceiling of traditional crystalline silicon cells. It is expected to become the next-generation core PV technology and further reduce power generation costs in the future.

V. Correction of Common PV Misconceptions

In the process of PV popularization, the public has many cognitive misconceptions, which are corrected as follows:

Misconception 1: PV systems only generate power on sunny days. Fact: PV power generation relies on natural light, so it can work on cloudy, overcast, early morning and evening hours. The power output decreases with weaker sunlight rather than stopping completely. N-type cells have superior low-light performance with much higher power generation capacity than traditional cells on cloudy days.

Misconception 2: Solar panels produce radiation and are unsafe. Fact: PV modules generate power through pure physical processes, producing no electromagnetic radiation, chemical pollution or noise during operation. Only inverters generate trace low-frequency radiation, which is far below national household appliance safety standards and completely safe for daily use.

Misconception 3: PV systems have a short service life and are easy to damage. Fact: Formal PV modules have passed strict tests including wind resistance, rainproof, lightning protection and hail resistance, adapting to harsh outdoor environments. The standard service life is 25 to 30 years, with almost no obvious attenuation in the first 10 years and extremely low subsequent attenuation, ensuring stable long-term returns.

Misconception 4: PV generates no power in winter and is only cost-effective in summer. Fact: Although summer has longer sunshine hours, high temperature will slightly reduce module power generation efficiency. In winter, the low temperature and soft sunlight help improve module efficiency, enabling stable power generation with sufficient sunlight.

VI. Core Advantages and Development Value of Photovoltaics

1. Low-carbon and Eco-friendly: PV power generation achieves zero emission and zero pollution throughout the operation process. It replaces traditional thermal power fueled by coal, reducing carbon dioxide and sulfide emissions, and serves as a core measure for realizing carbon neutrality goals.

2. Universal Resources and Public Participation: Solar energy is ubiquitous and consumes no scarce resources such as minerals and water. PV systems can be installed on rooftops and idle lands, enabling participation from both national large-scale energy projects and ordinary households.

3. Low Cost and Stable Long-term Returns: Thanks to years of technological iteration, the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of PV has dropped significantly, making it the most cost-effective clean energy. A one-time installation of PV system can deliver stable power generation for more than 25 years and continuously reduce electricity expenses.

4. Adaptable to New Power Systems: Matched with energy storage systems, PV power generation can effectively solve the volatility and intermittency of new energy, ensure stable grid operation, and accelerate the transformation and upgrading of the energy structure.

The future development of PV power generation will focus on high efficiency, high reliability, intelligence and integrated application. Technologically, continuous iteration will boost cell conversion efficiency and further reduce power generation costs. In terms of application, integrated modes such as PV+agriculture, PV+energy storage and PV+architecture will be fully popularized. In terms of operation and maintenance, AI intelligent regulation will realize automatic monitoring and maintenance of power stations. As a core pillar of global energy transformation, photovoltaics will become more efficient, intelligent and popular in the future.
